Currencies of Germany and European Countries

The official currency of Germany is the euro (EUR). It is the common currency of the euro area and legal tender in Germany.

Today, there are 49 countries in Europe, and 21 countries use the euro (EUR) as their official currency, forming the Eurozone. The euro is also used in 6 further countries and territories outside the European Union.

Other European countries retain their own national currencies. Nevertheless, the euro plays an important role across the region: some currencies are pegged to the euro (fixed rates) or use it as a reference currency. The euro is also important for many countries in foreign trade, foreign exchange reserves and international payments.

The euro (EUR) remains one of the key currencies in the region. The pound sterling (GBP), Swiss franc (CHF) and US dollar (USD) also play important roles in European and international foreign exchange markets (stable currencies).
